Northern Designer Awards
Interior Designer Of The Year 2000
The competition took place at the Concept For Living, Homes And Gardens Show at Tatton Park Cheshire. It was the very first time that these awards had taken place and it was the first time that an award had been held for northern based interior designers.
The competition was to design a room in 48hours of your choice in a 3 meter by 3 meter tent, a marquee was erected in the shape of a courtyard and then was divided into 30 sections, and each room had 3 tent sides and a wooden floor.
I decided that the best thing was to build a 3 meter by 3 meter open sided box. In building this box I kept adding to the design so that when it was finished it looked like a room with a window at the back with lights behind so that it looked like day light was coming though. I even tied the ceiling and tented the middle and hung a chandelier from the middle and put down lights round the outer edge.
My inspiration when considering our design for the show was to demonstrate that diversity of concepts, both in terms of periods, colour and lighting are achievable. In terms of period, we achieved this by classical marble pillars supporting a contemporary box-shaped, two-tier ceiling. With respect to the dining room set we endeavoured to integrate a circular regency paw-footed table, with French oval chairs, modern square plates and heart-shaped fish bowl as a centre piece. For colour, our approach was to demonstrate that cream/gold and black even though being from opposite ends of the spectrum can marry together, which was apparent throughout the room. The two forms of lighting being an eighteen bulb crystal chandelier and modern low energy downlighting, were used to combine two very distinct styles, with adaptability of use.
